From Manual Excel Exports to Automated Power BI Analytics
The Challenge
Every reporting cycle, our client’s team exported NetSuite Saved Reports to Excel, cleaned the data by hand and uploaded the files to SharePoint so Power BI could read them. The process was time consuming and difficult to scale as reporting needs grew.
- Power BI depended on manually prepared Excel files, with several hand-offs between NetSuite and the dashboards.
- Data had to be cleansed, validated and standardized by hand before anyone could use it.
- There was no controlled, repeatable way to scale reporting to new requirements.
- Manual spreadsheet-based reporting resulted in inconsistent metrics and delayed decision-making.
- Snapshot-based reporting failed to capture record updates and late-arriving operational events.
- Lack of centralized governance limited data visibility, lineage, and secure access management.
The Solution
We replaced the Excel and SharePoint workflow with an automated pipeline from NetSuite to Azure:
- Extract: Azure Data Factory pulls data from NetSuite through SuiteAnalytics Connect and lands it in Azure Data Lake Storage.
- Stage and validate: Data moves into Azure SQL staging tables, where it is validated, deduplicated and reconciled against NetSuite (row counts and totals are checked to confirm nothing is lost or altered).
- Transform: Cleansed data is standardized in business-ready layers and modeled as a star schema built for reporting.
- Report: Power BI connects directly to the dimensional model, with no files to prepare or upload.
Credentials for the NetSuite connection are stored in Azure Key Vault, keeping the integration secure and free of hard-coded secrets.
